The 2011 (SI 2011No 1885) amendments to The Carriage of Dangerous Goods and the Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations (SI 2009 No 1348) is available from www.opsi.gov.uk/ These regulations came into force for UK domestics movements on July 1st 2011.

Fire Extinguisher Requirements from 1/7/2007

Every transport unit shall be equipped with at least one portable fire extinguisher with a minimum capacity of 2 kg dry powder, (or equivalent) suitable for fighting a fire in the engine or cab of the transport unit.
Additional equipment is required as follows: (not required for Class 6.2 Infectious Substances)
(1) transport units with a maximum permissible mass greater than 7.5 tonnes, require one or more extinguishers with a total capacity of 12 kg dry powder (one must be at least 6 kg);
(2) transport units with a maximum permissible mass between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, require one or more with a total capacity of 8 kg dry powder (one must be at least 6 kg);
(3) transport units with a maximum permissible mass up to and including 3.5 tonnes, require one or more with a total capacity of 4 kg dry powder.
The capacity required under (a) can be deducted from the minimum total capacity required under (b).
Problems with Fire extinguisher are the most common reason for prohibitions being issued by VOSA, make sure you get it right!

Driver's Instructions in Writing

A new version of the Driver's Instructions in Writing came into use from 1/1/2017. The updated version has some minor changes to the text and also includes an illustration of the new Aquatic Pollutant danger sign and the Elevated Temperature symbol.
