Fuel Oil

1. Classification;

Classification is based on the product being liquid, having at 50°C a vapour pressure of not more than 300 kPa (3 bar), not being completely gaseous at 20°C at a standard pressure of 101.3 kPa and having a flashpoint of not more than 60°C, with the exception of UN1202 where the inclusion is up to a flashpoint of 100°C.

Note. Products handed over for carrriage and carried at a temperature equal to or higher than their flashpoint are also included in Class 3. These products are assigned to UN3256.

Proper Shipping Name - Motor Spirt, Gasoline or Petrol.

Packing Group - PGII

PGII is in Transport Category 2 so ADR applies to packged loads in excess of 333 litres.

Tunnel Code - D for road tanks, E for packaged goods.

Proper Shipping Name - Gas Oil, Diesel Fuel or Heating Oil, Light.

UN Class - 3

Packing Group - PGIII

PGIII is in Transport Category 3 so ADR applies to packged loads in excess of 1000 litres.

Tunnel Code - D for road tanks, E for packaged goods.

Proper Shipping Name - Kerosine.

Packing Group - PGIII

PGIII is in Transport Category 3 so ADR applies to packged loads in excess of 1000 litres.

Proper Shipping Name - Fuel Aviation, Turbine Engine.

UN Class - 3

Packing Group - dependent on Flashpoint and Initial boiling point.

PGI - Initial boiling point less than or equal to 35°C irrepective of flashpoint

PGII - Flash point less than 23°C, Initial boiling point greater than 35°C

PGIII - Flashpoint equal to or greater than 23°C and less than or equal to 60°C, Initial boiling point greater than 35°C.

PGI is in Transport Category 1 so ADR applies to packged loads in excess of 20 litres.

PGII is in Transport Category 2 so ADR applies to packged loads in excess of 333 litres.

PGIII is in Transport Category 3 so ADR applies to packged loads in excess of 1000 litres.

Tunnel Code - D for road tanks, E for packaged goods.

For loads transported in tanks ADR applies irrespective of quantity carried.

2. Documentation

Road Mode - ADR or UK domestic

If classified as hazardous a transport document showing the following is required:

  • the UN number preceded by the letters "UN"

  • the proper shipping name supplemented, when applicable with the technical name in brackets.

  • the Class number and any additional class hazards.

  • the packing group, if assigned, preceded by the letters PG.

  • the tunnel code (if applicable and the journey includes a regulated tunnel)

  • the number and description of the packages.

  • the total quantity of each item of dangerous goods.

  • the name and address of the consignor (sender) of the goods.

  • the name and address of the consignees (receivers) of the goods.

  • a declaration as requird by any special agreement.

The driver also requires to have a copy of his Emergency Instructions in Writing and to carry his ADR Vocational Training Certificate

Sea Mode - International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code applies.

An IMDG Dangerous Goods Declaration must be completed by the shipper.
